When my son got his license at 16, we didn't let him drive alone for a few months and treated it like a learner's permit situation still. My wife was a much nicer coach than I was, and we would act like driving instructors, pointing out things he needed to remember. After a couple of months, we let him start driving himself to school and work, all close by, not more than a couple of miles. We got an old Honda Civic for him to drive. The best thing happened when we were driving to Idaho, he was driving, my wife was up front with him, I am in the back chilling, and he passed a semi, and then also the Idaho State Trooper in an unmarked truck that was ahead of the semi, going 88 mph. The officer pulled us over and put the true fear into him about what reckless/speeding could mean for a young driver still new to it all. Then he let him go with a warning. Since then, he is a very safe and careful driver. I hope the same thing happens to my younger son when it is time.
