schedule a big-boy schedule and COVID ate it. That's why ESPN brings up our cancelled schedule all the time, as validation to viewers. If we actively schedule a weak schedule we don't get that benefit of the doubt from ESPN or voters. Sure, we'll crack the top 25, but we'll never have a shot at what we really want: Respect and a big, big game.
Look at the final rankings last year. Had BYU played this schedule in 2019 and won out, where do we land? I think we finish the season in the late teens, around where Memphis landed. Yay! Then we'd head off the El Paso for whatever bowl game we managed to McGiver together that year. That's if we went UNDEFEATED! Before you argue, ask yourself where Liberty would finish if it goes undefeated. Now add 4 or 5 spots because of the tradition and name recognition BYU has over Liberty. Not to mention we'd have to sit through Louisiana Tech, Southern Alabama, etc instead of taking our shots at some heavy weights and getting some good games to watch. Personally I've watched us beat USC, Texas, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Nebraska on replay many times each. I've never turned on a replay of us stomping San Jose State or Middle Tennessee.
Don't get me wrong, this season has been a blast and I'm loving the ride, but it's under very unique circumstances. Had the B1G and P12 been playing the whole time the country might have missed the BYU/Navy game that got it all started.
If you want to feel this feeling for real, we need to have a special year against the schedules Tom has been busting his butt to build. This might have been the year and team for it.
Thanks again China..
