You say "why settle for 9-4 or 8-5 when the same caliber of team could
finish 11-2". If a P5 team finishes a year 9-4 they will most likely finish the season ranked anyway. Almost every year there is a team that finishes the season with five losses that ends up ranked in the final poll. If BYU plays a good schedule and it results in more losses but also has some good wins and avoids bad losses they can still be ranked just as highly as if they play a crap schedule.

In 2017, for example Troy finished 11-2 and was unranked and had beaten LSU that season. That same year Stanford was 9-4 and finished ranked #13.

Has there ever been a BYU team that was top 25 quality that wasn't ranked at the end of the year because they played too hard of a schedule?
