Let me explain, if all conference champs are in the top 12, we need to be #12,

right? Whoever is #13 won't get in. But if one of the conference champs ends up at #15, everyone behind them would move up one (we'd be #11) and whoever was in #12 (previously #13) still isn't getting in. No change whatsoever in the outcome, other than the little number next to our logo.
