Or do they just assume that kicking it at 50 or 70% will get the job done, and are surprised when it doesn't?

There are other reasons besides "can't" that an adult wouldn't make it to the goal from half court.

Yes, the distance to midfield where it was kicked was about the same as the distance to the baseline where it landed
