Sorry for the loss. I think coming up with new traditions around the fire
and using it show to what really are the traditions of Christmas. I am not sure on specifics but maybe use the How the Grinch stole Christmas as an example of how to react. I think kids can see that story and how it applies to them and turn it into one the most memorable Christmases that they will ever have.
