On thing to look at is why rin plays fail and when they work...
When a QB sees 7 in the box all within 5 yards of the Center, the A and B gaps are not good holes, the C gaps probably not without a wash down left/right and the TE getting a good knock-out on the OLB.

QB's under Edward's KNEW to check out of such plays and go to an option B or C already predetermined based on his pre-snap read. For all the praise of Wilson, ARid and Jeff Grimes it did NOT seem like Wilson had the option to just check out of bad-decision plays once the defense was known.

The change up at the LOS was very common under OCs at BYU from the time QBs were Juniors and as far back as Giff Neilson through Brandon Doman. The last 19 years has puzzled me. Now John Beck and Max Hall took the heat from Anae when they checked out of a play, but all they had to do if unsuccessful is explain why in the film room. Taysom ran so much RPO that decisions were often his. Besides the Anae II system really was so lateral it greatly reduced his throwing options as he rolled to sidelines. I never liked that as a primary passing option, hated it. Rolling out should be an unexpected change up, not a desperation move because your lineman are as porous as a colander.

The bottom line is:

QBs have to be trusted. Never run a 5 in the box play against a seven man box, etc. Have the alternative ready, coaches need to trust players to get it right.
