I guess I was taking a different approach
I was thinking about the 6’1” 215 lbs kid who plays TE for Lone Peak. His money may beat out a more naturally gifted kid on the HS team, but it’s not going to get him a spot on BYU’s roster. That spot is going to the 6’5” 250 lbs kid from West Valley even if he’s not as technically sound as the LP kid.
If you’re focusing just on kids who are already on the team, I can agree to what you’re saying.
