So this assists athletes who would otherwise be ruled ineligible because withdrawing wouldn't have frozen the academic requirements for them to be eligible. Enrolled student athletes must still complete the required classes with a sufficient GPA, despite the freeze on their eligibility. Withdrawn student athletes do not have to complete those required classes, when under normal circumstances they would before they can compete, which would put them well behind the 8 ball. In terms of the flexibility, I believe it depends on the number of classes you take. If you are going part-time, you must still complete the courses with adequate grades.
