I was walking out of Home Depot today when I heard a commotion behind me and see a dude exiting the store at full sprint

with big Milwaukee tools in each hand. I processed the whole thing a second too slow, otherwise I probably could've tripped him or something before he got too far. But once I realized what was going on, I didn't do anything. I didn't chase after him even though people were shouting and I was the closest person to him.

I was with my dad and he was bothered that I didn't intervene, but I had zero desire to throw myself into a potentially dangerous scenario to try and save Home Depot a few hundred bucks in stolen merchandise. I already know that I am a terrible person, but was it validated again today by me choosing to not help when I could have?
