Our fanbase either needs to stop acting like tightwads and start acting like we actually have money to spend on road trips, or else we will always carry the stigma of being cheap. This has impacted BYU to a certain extent over the years when it comes to being selected for bowl games. Local businesses generally benefit from visiting teams during bowl game season, and they can hold great sway over bowl committee members. I've heard it directly that the Sugar Bowl would not be excited about BYU because the fans would not spend a lot of money on Bourbon Street.
The majority of our fanbase that travels to Vegas for the Arizona game will not be gambling in the casinos or spending money at the bars and strip clubs, so we need to at least try to support the hotels, restaurants, retail stores, and other family-friendly businesses. Some of our fans will "enjoy" themselves in Vegas, but not enough to make a big difference. Hopefully we can disprove what Lavell used to say about BYU fans who come to town with a $20 bill and the Ten Commandments and won't break either one.
