I re-homed some goldfish.
Right down the toilet.
My daughter used them for a school science project and then they somehow lasted WAY longer than goldfish usually do.
Wife took the kids to visit her parents and while they were gone, I flushed 'em.
Took my daughter a full week to realize they were gone.
I was the 'bad guy' for about 24 hours.
Sorry - not helpful for your dog situation.
