BYU and Independents can win: Join the Sunbelt as Associate members
First, I appreciate your analysis. It is accurate, and if we don't do anything it will be very bad for BYU football.
There is another way for BYU and the independents to prosper and be a winner. We just have to be aggressive instead of passive. Fortunately, we have an aggressive partner that will act even when BYU's passive administration does not: the Sunbelt.
Many mock the Sunbelt, but they are only where th2ey are due to tradition and lack of resources. While conferences with much more tradition and money closed up shop last year, the Belt played a full season. They don't have the talent of the SEC, but they still have the drive to compete and try new things.
The Sunbelt would most likely be willing to allow BYU to join as an associate member in football: We keep our schedule, they keep their schedules, but the "Sunbelt Champion" is the highest rated team, not the winner of their championship game. If we get the playoff spot, we split the money with them in some way. it is not the money we need - it is the recognition, recruiting, and goal of reaching the playoffs. However, the Sunbelt would be greatly aided by the addition of such money, and benefit from being associated with BYU - even if it is just for post-season.
It would not require a 12 team playoff for both to benefit. It would have been good for us to have done this years ago. But, it is the addition of a 12 team playoff that makes such a move strategically necessary, and may give the administration enough courage to get it done. Much better than having the MWC or AAC lock us in long term.
