Good Questions. BYU being currently Independent is the main difference
1. It would be kind of funny to see the SEC basically gobble up the SunBelt. But I think Auburn would want to stay in the SEC instead of moving into the SunBelt. BYU being independent, and having it's sports in other conferences, it can be an "Associate" member of the SunBelt for Football, as could the other independents. Since Auburn is in a conference for other sports, changing conferences would probably be a little more difficult. I would think there is some rule against a team being part of two conferences in the same football season. Being an associate member of a conference is something done in a large number of NCAA sports. For example, Wyoming is in the Big XII (associate in Wrestling) since their conference does not offer it. The WCC does not offer football, so this seems to be a loophole we can exploit.

2. This is the downside for the SunBelt: One of their core teams has a great year, and gets shut out of the playoff because BYU has a better year, and so is the representative. This would make people pretty angry.

But, the SunBelt also is at risk of one of their teams leaving for a better conference, such as CUSA or the AAC. So, having BYU as part of the conference reduces the risk of the SunBelt being raided, as it increases their stature. It also gives team such as Boise St. an option to be independent, which makes our current situation easier when there are more independent teams.

Not sure all the NCAA rules, but there seems to be enough flexibility as an independent to get it done. Also, I don't think the P5's would put up too much of a fight, as Notre Dame would probably do a similar deal with the ACC.
