I'm starting to think that there's a connection between certain neurological
conditions/disorders and an insatiable appetite for sweet things (particularly sugary beverages).

My dad, for example, suffers from a Parkinson's-like condition and prefers sweet drinks over almost anything (they typically make up about 80% of his daily caloric intake).

Recently, I stopped by a family I'm assigned to minister to deliver a package of nuts as a birthday present for the husband who has middle-stage dementia. The wife answered the door and said, "thank you for not bringing something sugary as I've been trying to keep my husband to lay off the sweets."

Now, my sister's family is staying with us and they have a 19 year old autistic son. We can't keep up with his orange juice consumption.
