... aren't brought to light. Widespread bombing of competitor reviews would tank Yelp's credibility completely, but it would also require the general public being made aware. If that threat existed, they would have a much stronger incentive to moderate reviews to eliminate fake ones.

They may be worried about credibility the other way - losing face for curating what they show - but their goal should be legitimacy, and that does require some curation.
