In fact, for as much as people give Utah crap here for their performance of the P12, it mirrors BYU‘s in the mountain west pretty closely.
So… Which is it? Dominant? Or nice to have?
BYU is a great school. Excellent program. But I wouldn’t even call BYU the flag bearer of the mountain west, let alone ready to take on the remnants of the big 12.
How do you magically surpass TCU? I think just about all of us remember what it was like when both interacted on the field The last few years in the mountain west.
I’d reign that confidence back a little bit
BYU was reputable. Probably the best known brand in the mountain west until you tell when the second BCS bowl.
But a lot of that was residual from the 80s success 20 years earlier in in an inferior conference.
That’d be like Utah fans bragging to pack 12 opponents about BCS wins.
I don’t even think Utah was dominant in the mountain west.
Yet Utah was still the Winningest program from the MW outset, the best against BCS schools, had the highest profile wins and the BCS bowls brought higher viewership, more notoriety and more money to the conference than any other team in that era.
I’ve been pretty open about my confidence level if you are going to the big 12 because they are such an attractive program. BYU is exceptional at many levels.
But not quite to be the blue blood of a P5.
