And I should clarify my take

As a parent I, of course, would feel bad for the kids in the BYU Band who worked their butts off if they ended up last.

My point was that, as a fan, where our band finishes in conference and other competitions doesn't make a difference to me. I want BYU teams and organizations to do well, but some don't directly impact me. So, unlike the earlier poster, I wouldn't be worried about whether or not BYU upped its game in the band department.
