My blue goggles blame it on geography, but I think conference affiliation (or lack thereof) is also part of it
For the elitist P5 crowd that views any P5, no matter how bad, as inherently superior to any G5 (or non-ND independent), no matter how good, they simply don't pay a lot of attention to any of these teams.

The exception being if they play in a conference championship game or a big postseason game.

Since 2010, UCF has played in 6 conference championship games, won 5 conference titles and played in 3 major bowls against high-end P5 talent (2010 Liberty vs Georgia, 2013 Fiesta vs Baylor, 2017 Peach vs Auburn, 2018 Fiesta vs LSU)

Cincy has played in 5 conference championships, won 4 titles and just had a good showing in the Peach Bowl against Georgia.

Houston has been to 3 conference championships with 1 win and has bowl wins against Penn St and Florida St (in the Peach Bowl)

BYU has no conference championship appearances, no conference titles, and the most noteworthy bowl appearances are 2013 Fight Hunger Bowl against Washington (a 16-31 loss) or the 2015 Vegas Bowl against Utah (a 28-35 loss).

Of course those other teams are going to be more in the memory of sports talk radio in ACC/SEC country

There's lots of ways to argue BYU is a stronger team, but if you're just looking for end of season showcases when the P5 world pays a bit more attention? Well that's where Independence has most hurt us. Glad to be getting out of it, especially to go P5
