People love to hire ex-jocks.
Some bosses act like having a former D1 athlete working for them is the coolest thing ever. They end up fawning over the ex-athletes and wanting to hear old war stories from their playing days. I've seen this happen more than once.

I think indicating that you were a student athlete on your resume is OK, and should at least be on the activities or personal info at the end of the resume. Being a student athlete is like having a full-time job while going to school, so it could help to explain why there isn't a lot of other work experience.
