It is also true that finding employment after 3 years away is not a given,
especially at the level a lot of these MPs were at. I know of a few cases where they got home and it took some time (like over a year) to find decent employment again. You need people in those positions that have some independent wealth to withstand a potential post-mission employment drought or period of underemployment. Three years away in today's economic environment is a long time.

That being said, I don't know of anyone who has regretted serving.
