I think we actually are agreeing here. My point is to make the transit easier
for people then driving, or at least relatively equal. For example, if it comes frequently and close to where you are, then it's great. If you have to walk a mile to get there, it's not great. If transit gets you there faster, or at least within a similar time, then it's great to be able to work on the train. If it's cheaper than driving (gas+parking+repairs+car cost), then that's a good incentive.

So I believe we should:
- invest in transit by subsidizing fares for more or all

- Charge drivers the true cost that they put on road infrastructure. Many times drivers think driving is cheaper, when it's really not ... they're just paying for the infrastructure through general taxes. Instead, let's reduce general taxes and tax drivers for usage of the road, which is a conservative approach (only tax those using the service). We need to help people see the true cost of driving (which is going to REALLY bite us as a country because our roads are falling apart at the same time everywhere and upkeep is going to be brutal). I know this one is controversial, but really ... right now we're subsidizing driving when I think we should be subsidizing other forms of transit instead that more efficiently (and cleanly) get people where they need to go. Car infrastructure is really, really expensive.

- make bike parking really easy everywhere you go, so that you can go "door to door" which cuts down the time wasted parking and walking, and makes biking more competitive.

- make biking safe so women and kids can do it (these are usually the people least likely to bike)

- Double track Frontrunner and speed it up. If you can cruise down I-15 in less time and if the train comes twice as often, that'd be a huge win.

And why should we do these things if we ourselves just want to drive? Because:
- the more people not driving, the cleaner the air
- the more people biking/walking, the lower health care costs are
- the more people biking/transit, fewer accidents on the road
- the more people biking/transit the less traffic on the road. Interestingly, the Netherlands, where 50% of trips are not by car, is actually the European country voted most pleasant to drive in. It's a dream to drive there because the traffic is light within cities, and because you don't worry about hitting pedestrians so much because the roads are designed to protect pedestrians naturally. It's pretty sweet.

In all of this, I don't think we get rid of cars or ways for people to drive. We just make it so much easier to take transite/bike that people naturally choose those things, like you said you did when it actually worked well. I've lived in places where it worked really well too, where I biked because I wanted to because it was MUCH easier than driving.
