krindorr Intervention Needed
Make no mistake, I don't like him as a person, but he's been successful in quite a few places

It's possible to spin very different stories on Lane Kiffin (https://www.cougarboard.com/board/message.html?id=27954294) following his Raiders hire.

He was fired from the Raiders after 2 bad and controversial seasons. He then went to Tennessee where he had a mediocre season, then cut and bailed to go to USC. While there he oversaw USC's fall from glory, before being fired and not being able to get a HC job anywhere. After a year working in Saban rehab, he got a job at some no-name school which he promptly ditched to go to Ole Miss. He was mediocre at Ole Miss as well except for the one season he happened to luck into a first-round QB.

Alternatively Kiffin was hired by the Raiders when they were the worst team in the NFL. There he strongly fought for the team to NOT draft JaMarcus Russell, but despite this huge misstep the team was able to show gradual improvement. Despite this he was fired since he didn't see eye to eye on personnel moves with the team (seriously, Al Davis called out Kiffin not wanting to draft JaMarcus as justification for firing him). Following that, Kiffin went to Tennessee where he got immediately improved results and oversaw an offensive explosion. Tennessee fans were furious to see him leave to USC since they saw the beginnings of something great. At USC he was saddled with the worst sanctions handed out to a football team in 25 years and a program that Pete Carroll had left in disarray. The NCAA made a special exception to the rule to allow players to leave the USC program (USC only had 71 scholarship players out of 85 in his first year). Despite these crippling issues and massive recruiting limitations, Kiffin was more successful than coaches who came after, even though they didn't have those issues. He then worked as an assistant and was a finalist for best assistant coach in the nation. He moved on to a small-time school with no history of success, and in 3 seasons led them to their only 2 outright conference championships and their 2 best ever seasons. He then moved on to a historic SEC program in disarray (also recovering from heavy sanctions). His first year was their best season in the last 5 (since those sanctions came down) and by his second year he had turned Ole Miss into a Top 11 team while transforming the previously unheralded QB into a first round pick.

Both those descriptions are true. And just as someone who only looks at the 2nd version is biased, so is someone who only looks at the 1st.
