So Utah this season has 5100 season ticket holders.
Average announced attendance is 7500, though actual attendance has been substantially lower. The number of tickets scanned isn't generally announced, but for the Washington St game (where announced attendance was 11k) only 6k tickets were scanned.
So definitely a terrible fan performance, all taking place in a venue that seats 15k (or 8.5k with upper bowl curtained).
Stats for BYU 1996-1997 are harder to come by. But there's some details in this article about Roger Reid's firing (
https://apnews.com/article/156b22d2d7517f105f743de413aef910) which notes that despite having 15000 season ticket holders, BYU started the season averaging less than 7000 at games and had less than 4000 there for a Saturday afternoon home tipoff against Houston in the Cougar Classic.
Given that the MC held 23000 at the time (it's continually had the capacity diminished), a turnout of sub 4000 leaves it pretty cavernous and empty.
Of course, that's just the first 7 games of the season. But I can't imagine that the coach being fired and the team losing literally every conference game got people MORE excited as the season went on or increased attendance.
Utah's in a world of hurt and getting pathetic showings for sure. But it unrealistic to pretend we were never there
