Dogs, generally speaking, are pack animals. They need to belong to a group and are actively seeking to reinforce those bonds with their "pack" for their own benefit. They have developed ways to detect emotions and the needs of other pack members to allow the pack to succeed, which means they also succeed. As a result, they're a good fit for human companionship.

Cat on the other hand, typically don't give a crap about anyone but themselves.
