They live by a pack mentality. They will defend their pack to the death in most cases. It may not be the same as human love. But it's love nonetheless. However, I agree that to treat your dog like a child is ludicrous, hedging into insanity. Dogs are not people. But they still have emotions like love, hate, anger, happiness, fear, contentment, etc.
