Anecdotally I have to assume BYU language programs are well ahead of the U,

thanks to the missionary program. Anecdotally, the head of the BYU Italian department says she regularly gets BYU students to work with the Yale Italian department, because BYU students (predictably) have stronger conversational and practical language skills than upper division Yale students.
