this one is easy. The period was a stray typo. The sentence should have ended

in a colon and then, simply, D. The email formatting auto-corrected ":D" into the smiley emoji.

In other words, should have read as follows- "wanted to provide an update for Hotlanta:D"

They just wanted to update you to let you know they graded your interview as a 'D.'
