Emerson's essays or Gordon Wood's "Creation of the American Republic" ...
are strong contenders. Homer's Iliad comes to mind. I've read it several times. "Miracle at Philadelphia" is outstanding. But "The Pursuit of History" by John Tosh and "Cry the Beloved Country" and "True Grit" and ... oh, man - I can't choose. There are so many great ones.

Count of Monte Cristo was really good, as was A Tale of Two Cities (similar to Monte Cristo actually).
