Substitute poorly with a softer word then. Less hospitable maybe. They aren't

all that warm overall. Just indifferent. Take little interest. Seems like their kids would rather be over here, based on time spent here.

Maybe it's good for my kids to see/feel actually, so they can get a good feel for the subtle differences between various people.
