In the most competitive majors (e.g. business, pre-med, engineering) you pretty much have to apply with a 4.0 and 32+ ACT; but for the non-competitive majors (e.g. music, graphic arts, education) they rely mostly on transfer students and accept some applicants with subpar HS credentials.
The way to take advantage of the non-competitive majors for admissions is to contact the department directly & be willing to travel to Provo to show them the applicant’s talents in-person. In the past 5 years we’ve known music performance, communications, and computer graphics majors who made it in this way. All 3 were sub-3.0 GPAs and mid-20s ACTs, made a good impression, and were admitted with a little help. 2 of the 3 probably wouldn’t be active in the church today had they not been admitted.
