It is an arms race and if you aren't fully invested in the goal of making the college football playoff, you will end up a middle of the road or maybe even lower tier P5 program. I am really interested to see what changes they make and if it translates into any sort of measurable success next year and beyond.
There are loads of programs that don't have some of the limitations that BYU does, that really want it. That desire is tough to compete with, unless the administration really invests in it. The BYU football program is one of the more notable and recognizable organizations that represent the church in some fashion and they do it in the black.
Hope they can take it to the next level with good P5 money.
