I tell my daughter weekly I’d rather she go to Berkeley or BYU on my dime than
Fresno ST on a scholarship. She’s at a level where she could play D3 and go to a really good academic school but not where she could get a scholarship at a school worth going to.

I have a couple cousins who played D1 waterpolo. One for just a few weeks at Cal before she decided she wasn’t interested in spending time she would be better off using to study to prep for Med school. She played for a high level club team but got her studying in and went to Med school.

Her brother played for a top ten a D1 program back East for four years and got into a good grad program in economics but if he had put the time into studying that he put into waterpolo he’d be at an elite school like his sister was for Med school. He’d also have avoided some injuries.

Look at Houston Heimuli. Dude wanted to be a doctor and couldn’t get his prereqs done at Stanford in four years. It’s a difficult thing to do as a regular student let alone a D1 athlete.

Now for some football players it’s a different ball game and if someone’s willing to shell out the NIL dollars you go for it. You’re giving up a ton of other possibilities to play ball. If playing ball is important to you I say go for it.
