If you like tacos/Mexican, hit any one of the many taco shops all over San Diego
And get a good Baja style fish taco, carne asada, carnitas, etc. The California burrito is worth a try, if you have had had one before.

Old town has some sit down places that are stereotypical, but could be fun for your kids. I don’t have any that I am crazy about.

I do like Phil’s. The ribs are good. I like the sandwiches, the Torro or the Broham, are both good in my opinion. I can’t compare Phil’s to places like Bam Bam’s, which I hear about on CB all the time. I have never been.

If you are staying closer to the zoo, downtown or mission valley, you could walk around Balboa Park on Sunday.

There are a lot of great restaurants near the Zoo and downtown. I can’t think of any that are quick and cheap, and kid friendly. There is a place called the “Corvette Diner,” (https://www.cohnrestaurants.com/corvettediner) that some like with kids. Burgers and shakes.

There is some great Asian food in San Diego as well, if you guys like that. Ranging from authentic Chinese, to Korean BBQ, to great Raman and Pho. “Convoy” area, which is south of Miramar has all kinds of great places.
