I think you make my point for me.
20 years ago Utah was on the same level as SDSU, New Mexico, CSU
10 years ago — WSU, Cal, Arizona
5 years ago — Stanford, ASU, CU
Today — Oregon, USC, UW
Utah has surpassed so many former peers, and almost all of their fans would be thrilled for their school to have Utah's success.
BYU fans don't really want to see that. They jump on every Utah loss as evidence that Utah is headed towards imminent demise.
It's strange. But it has created this phenomenon where BYU Fans cling so much to each Utah loss, they forget other programs lose to. So they are constantly holding Utah up to the same level as undefeated Georgia. Any loss is an embarrassment and exposes Utah.
In reality, very few schools are winning at the same level. The ones who are, are the blue blood programs.
I just don't think BYU fans get that there are material differences between storied SEC programs, tOSU, ND, Penn State vs. Utah. Utah has no business being on the same anything as them.

They wouldn't bring in any more money. Contract would increase only enough to cover them at current rate.

CFB is a meritocracy. It's exactly why all 3 BCS busters in the last era jumped to better conferences.
