And this is NOT largely a matter of Pope being an ineffective recruiter.

I think you'd be humbled if you knew how-&-who Pope's turned away in the interview process because he knew they wouldn't be BYU fits. And that's not to say other coaches elsewhere don't turn away their share for character & background issues. But at BYU it's a whole other level than a place like UVU. This is not something that's really changed all that much under Pope.

And at UVU, of course the academic requirements are, are...well...

Do you really think Pope even thinks about scouring lists of academically red-flagged players? I guarantee you that's been an MO of UVU since the beginning of their program. As it should be. That of course is one other avenue for acquiring players that only improved with the advent of the Portal.
