Cal's coach pushed that storyline, even though the Varsity Cup did not use the NCAA athletic eligibility rules and neither of the situations mentioned were even covered by the restrictions the Varsity Cup rules had in place. It was a witch hunt started by Cal's coach because BYU had knocked them off the pinnacle despite BYU rugby not having scholarship players, while Cal did.

On a side note: In a few days it will be 50 years ago that the BYU Rugby team toured Canada by bus playing college teams and club teams across the country. Only one female was on that bus trip, my sister. Her husband was a player on the team. They had just gotten married and that tour was their honeymoon trip.
