I've also read they tried to do this, but from high altitude with B17's. Clouds made this more inaccurate.
They also found that such precision bombing from significant altitude could not be as accurate as the had hoped. Utah Beach had low altitude planes work wonders on the defense forces on D-day, saved a lot of lives. They did not have a good of air support on Omaha Beach, a big reason it was so deadly. They had over estimated the high altitude bombing and didn't prepare enough low altitude and may have been limited by geography.
