Naval bombardment mostly overshot the beach fortifications; even in Desert Storm
higher altitude bombing was grossly inaccurate with dumb bombs and low-level bombing was doctrinally frowned upon for vulnerability it posed.

I've also read they tried to do this, but from high altitude with B17's. Clouds made this more inaccurate.
