I have a friend that runs a homeless shelter.
I had lunch with him the other day to see what our Church could do to help the homeless situation where I live. I asked if he ever feels guilty not giving money to people holding signs at intersections. He asked me, "Do you feel guilty not going into the mexican restaurant or hardware store you've never been in? These folks are running a small business and I choose not to be a patron of their business." I thought that was an interesting take.

He also said according to his very non-scientific stats that 40% of homeless want to live this lifestyle, they usually are more than willing to take any extra handouts, but many don't. 40% are addicts. 10% are mentally ill and the other 10% are women and children who have been abandoned.
