You really don't get it without both. Those who are impacted most have some sort of family history related to skin cancer and then also had some significant exposure in their lives.
In my case, it wasn't until after my diagnosis that I discovered lots of skin cancer in my family. I wish that people would have talked about it more... but I grew up in the 70's when we just didn't have the same level of information we do now.
I'm living proof that melanoma can be beat, but you have to be disciplined to go to the dermatologist every 6 months. I've had 3 melanomas and over 30 displastic nevi sites removed. I call it my incremental weight loss plan... one small patch of skin at a time.
