I think Kalani’s job is much harder behind the scenes, trying to work with (or against) the system at BYU than most of us know
He’s had disproportionately difficult schedules.
And he’s delivered some great moments.
OTOH, recruiting has not gotten substantially better during his tenure as most believed it would. Kalani does not inspire confidence in his communication of X’s and O’s or demonstrate game management prowess consistently either. His overemphasis on culture as an answer for everything delivers few observable benefits. There’s been rumors and some observable cases of disorganization behind the scenes and throughout the department.
And then there’s the actual on-field results. Big wins, yes. But there have been a disappointing amount of bad losses as well where the team plays an uninspiring brand of football that has the announcers perplexed at what we are doing. Too often, we have t shown up at all of late.
We have a bit of history with Kalani in my corner of the world that dates back way before he took the reins at BYU. I’d love to see him go down as our 2nd greatest coach…or be mentioned in the same breath as Lavell even. But he’s been here since 2016, and last year was awful.
KS needs to step up the program’s performance and deliver improved results.
