We are playing a bit of semantics here, and I don’t think we completely disagree for the most part.
One is difference I don’t see the question as “has KS really been so bad at recruiting…” Bronco openly admits that recruiting is not his strength, and it was believed to be Kalani’s strength – – he highlighted it as a priority in his initial press conference. And recruiting was essentially the same. I tried to give every benefit of the doubt to find improvement, but it wasn’t there any objective measure I can find. We were struggling at recruiting before Kalani. It was supposed to get better. If rankings matter at all, it really hasn’t until last year really. And as you note, that improvement is almost all on one side if the ball.
It is likewise not just the unrelenting emphasis on culture. Yes Bronco did something similar, but Bronco backed it with fanatical effort on the defensive side of the ball and developed a formidable scheme. Bronco became an accomplished defensive tactician at BYU. When KS shows no sustained proficiency to speak of on either side of the ball and answers criticism with culture culture culture, it rings rather hollow.
I of course still want Kalani to succeed, and unlike some, I don’t think it is beyond his capabilities to right the ship again. But the results last year were inexcusably, horrifically bad in the second half of the year in particular.
KS has earned a short leash in my mind. I won’t say it is absolutely do or die this season, but BYU MUST show sustained improvement and consistency as a program over last year or he could justifiably be sitting in an extremely hot seat in 2025.
