You can't know KY's thoughts on how tough BYU recruiting is ...
As fans, we'd like to get the new lineup SOLVED quickly, because there are
'too many balls up in the air' at the same time with roster slots and coaching slots to fill.

While KY is new to D1 college recruiting, and the swamp of NIL problems (including recruits who want top dollar NOW), he already picked two excellent assistant coaches to HELP move things along.

I place more emphasis on one noteworthy trait from KY that several independent sources have confirmed — he takes time to build relationships with his players.

As you say, he may find it tougher to establish relationships with EVERYONE he needs to build a new roster which mixes current and future players, but it's also possible that he fully expected it to be time-consuming and tough.

One clue is whether or not he is PATIENT.

If he's not PATIENT, you're probably right.

However, when asked about filling the remaining coaching slots, he stated that it was far more important to screen and assemble the right TEAM of coaches, than to fill the slots right away and then regret it later if chemistry doesn't pan out.

For sure, dealing with NBA talent and agents is way different than going after top portal or European talent, when NIL demands can be ridiculously so high that he's asking for trouble if he's always offering top dollar.

As a new D1 coach who is skilled at assessing NBA talent, and who has expertise in developing NBA talent from those not quite good enough to be drafted high, this NIL stuff would give any new coach nightmares. He now has to assess whether a candidate would be reasonably loyal to BYU if BYU does not offer top dollar.

He may be deliberate in taking his time, to dig deeper on portal candidates, to sort out which of candidates A through K have solid team-first motivation, versus those who are focused on big NIL payoff NOW.

All that could make him want to go SLOWER, even if fans demand FASTER.

My favorite comment on KY came from Booker, where he wished that KY had been his college coach. Sounds like KY became a partner in Booker's success, and not just a coach, where Booker looks at him as a resource person more than with most coaches. When I listened to Booker's comment, and in other players who touted his skill, they all seemed to like the fact that KY took time to INVEST in them, not just shout out instructions on what play to run, etc.

That's just a guess.

No doubt NBA and D1/NIL coaching are way different.

Your comment suggested he had no clue that it would be this tough. I'm just guessing, as well, but I read this SLOWNESS as him being CAREFUL with the minefield of D1 coaching, while he is getting his bearings. A year from now, he'll be faster.

His SLOWNESS may also show signs of wisdom, if he's going slow because he's careful about who he brings on board and in trying to reasonably estimate who would do what for/against future team chemistry.

Each of the current BYU players spoke of how easy it was to talk with him, because he draws out of each player his own viewpoint of what he can contribute on the new roster.

Working all that out, with a wide variety of personalities and backgrounds, takes time. The fact that his NBA players speak so highly of their own relationship with him is great evidence that his people skills are exceptional. Right off the mark, we get a great transfer at center from Utah and at 4 from Stanford. Quality work, from a skeleton staff, taking its time to get it right. We could have missed on both of those (we will miss on others), but that ain't bad for a start.
