Pre-cooling your house in the summer
I live in TX and I've started pre-cooling my house each day in an attempt to improve comfort and save $$$ at the same time.

- Daytime setting is 74 F (6am - 10pm)
- Nighttime setting is 67 F

This means the house (and everything in it) is noticeably cooler to start the day, which means it should take longer to heat up as the outdoor temp rises. If AC is just a heat pump, and you can think of the house as a heat bucket that the pump has to keep at or below a certain level, then it seems like it should be a wash in terms of total energy used to remove heat. The same amount is added to the house each day regardless, so it has to remove the same amount overall, regardless of when it does the work.

However, the theory is that the AC is actually more efficient at removing heat from the house when the outdoor temperature is cooler (i.e. at night), so I should be getting more bang for my AC buck if I can front-load some of the work in the late evening/early morning when outdoor temps are much lower.

Another side effect is that the house is cooler at night, which can improve sleep.

Has anyone tried or had any experience with this? Have you noticed any impact on your home comfort or cooling bills?
