No More Blue 72 - Martha McMullin
As a “truly blue mom” reading the varied responses to my opinion had an unexpected benefit: it was good therapy. You guys are great. It was good to hear different opinions.

There were many questions about 2 things: Cade ‘s personal responsibility to be eligible, and the scholarship that was offered Cade:

1- Cade met with an academic athletic advisor before transferring from Ricks to BYU to address his eligibility. The NCAA rule that was overlooked and caused the 1/2 credit error states that 70% of classes each semester have to be in the athlete’s declared major. Again, this was not intentional on Cade’s part, and could easily have been remedied in the summer of 2002.

2. However, the scholarship that was offered Cade was for fall of 2003, not 2002. Cade was to red shirt 2002 in order to learn BYU’s offense. It was offered with a hand shake, in front of another coach and other players. There was no condition mentioned at all regarding eligibility for 2002.

I understand that many people question Cade’s ability to perform. The answer is simple: he is good enough to scholarship, because he was offered one. It was reneged not because of ability and work ethic, and not because he wasn’t one of the top ten. Of course I’m his mom and no one should believe me, so don’t. There are other honest, reliable sources for this information.

One last point: Cade gave 110% all last year without a scholarship. He would have done that this year and next if he had hope of actually playing. However, Crowton plays his scholarshipped linemen because he has a financial commitment to them. Now that’s a catch 22. Frankly, Cade never got out of Coach Crowton’s doghouse.

Next time a player leaves BYU football because of a “misunderstanding”, remember Cade. Sharing all this may give other players heads up and prevent another situation like this. My unsolicited advice: get it in writing.

Well that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it! I’m over it. Cade’s getting on with his life. My husband & I are both BYU grads, and have great loyalty to the school, and to BYU Football. Our daughter is a BYU student and is going on a mission to Norway this fall. Let’s move on. The USC game is this weekend. Go Cougars!
