The content of the essays is more important than the style, structure, or grammar.
Essays are the main area of the application that allows students to describe their priorities and goals. BYU admissions has to make decisions based on these components of the application.
It certainly helps to have great scores AND a genuine desire to align the the University mission.
I agree with what others here have suggested - interviews would be a great way to explore this... but this is logistically impossible in some areas.

It’s really not. Too many kids are going to BYU in spite of what it stands for and not because of it.

Letter of Rec may speak to how aptly an applicant fits at BYU's mission. Essays don't. At all. Anyone can say whatever

This would be a good data point, except seminary teachers are so inconsistent. Some are all in on the rec, some couldn't
