This was one of the blessings in disguise for me.
I totally feel for people in your position. I ended up retiring in 2019, a couple years earlier than I thought i might.
Thankfully, we bought a house in Idaho the year before in 2018, before Idaho home prices went completely crazy. But I feel for the many people in your situation, and it could have been me, but for other circumstances that derailed what I thought I wanted to happen.

Yeah if I had access to a VA loan I would have bought asap. 0 down and no PMI? Seems like a no brainer
