Not very successful, but very talented
Florida State's an elite recruiter, so they scare me when down like Texas scares me when down. Virginia's closer to a recruiting peer to BYU.
Florida State actually finished 7-6 in 2009, winning their bowl game over West Virginia (9-4). Here's their six losses:
34-38 vs Miami (9-4)
7-17 vs South Florida (8-5)
21-28 @ Boston College (8-5)
44-49 vs Georgia Tech (11-3)
24-40 @ Clemson (9-5)
10-37 @ Florida (13-1)
Lot of losses, but not really a bad team. 3-6 against winning teams and 4-0 against the rest.
