It happens all the time.
Do you even watch football. When two evenly matched teams play and it's a blowout like that you can be sure luck played a massive part in the game.

Let me help you out. BYU turned the ball over seven times in that game. Turnovers - especially fumbles - are mostly luck. If Utah scored a TD on every turnover (and I think they may have) that is 48 points based largely on luck.

Do you think we hammered UCLA so bad a few years ago because we were that much better than them? No, we were lucky to get 6 turnovers in that game. We probably would have won anyway but not in a record setting blowout like that.

In that Utah game BYU was absolutely physically pounding Utah. Then snap over the head (no lick there I guess). well, we continue pounding Utah. Their heads were down, Whit was screaming, Christopher, White and Wynn were all hurt and it looked like BYU was about to blow the game wide open. Then another turnover and instead of us being up at least 10-7 with momentum we were down 14-10. Then the second half started and the turnovers really happened.

So if you don't think luck was the driving factor in that game then you never watched it. When CSU and Boise killed us in 03 that was not luck. They just killed us. But Utah beating us 54-10 was based on frustrating luck - and that loser Witt running up the score like the great sportsman he is. Utah was up 3 scores to start the 4th and Whit has them pile on for 24 more points in the fourth with his starters in for half of the quarter. I have never seen a coach do anything like that before. Of course I have never seen a coach kick an onside kick when up by 40 points before either.
